I had originally named this subspecies found in the wild as Musa acuminata var. sumatrana since it was the only variant name that I could find in the Singapore Flora Checklist (published in 2009). In October 2017, someone wrote to me suggesting that this banana tree should be another subspecies named (Musa acuminata ssp. malaccensis) instead and shared a related link from the Banana.org website.
